For nearly a month I have been the mentor teacher to two young ladies from the nearby Teacher Training College. And for nearly a month I have been mentoring, giving them tips for effective teaching, how to have a good class management, check on their record books , their lesson plans, even their grammar and their pronunciation during practical teaching.I am not superduper good but I have the experience to share..
Told them their objectives for each lesson should be achieved by the end of the lesson. Pupils would be able to do or understand what you expect from them .
Should I see any doubts on anything at all during the teaching process I would gladly correct them. They are young ladies with big hearts to be teachers..
They asked me.."lama dah puan jadi cikgu ? "
I said " sama tua dengan umur awak ! . "
I told them this is one of the jobs that provides challenges,(its not easy to face 30 human beings with different background, personalities, and abilities in one classroom.. I used to have fitful sleeps often too.) sometimes children become fractious when they are tired. and many of them are boisterous too with their unbounded and unflagging energy .Masa ni la I always fill the time by telling them stories which make them open their eyes even wider..he he.
And on top of that its the personal reward that matters most..hujung tahun when results are out, budak2 come to you and say thank you teacher...best kan ?
Of course I told them, jadi cikgu mesti pandai kelentong jugak...( I will tell you more about this later.( pasai kelentong punya pasai )..but whatever you plan for your students must be done promptly, no dilly dally.
Yes standing in front of the class with all eyes on you, sometimes you hilang idea .To them you are the super hero in their eyes..Tiba2 jadi mental block..so what to do ..kelentong la.but kelentong wisely la...jangan sampai mengarut pulak....this is where your sense of humour comes in of course accompanied with your most captivating winsome smile ever....
Anyway I make it a point that the two teachers to be, doing their practical in the school ,get all the help and guidance they need. .
Tomorrow is their last day, and this morning someone took our photo together...sebagai kenang kenangan..I wish them all the best in their teaching career.Keep on learning, do lots of reading and dont be shy to ask.... ..Selamat.
